A stack follows your topic.

Name a Research Stack, select it, then add quotes as you read. Each selection keeps its source title, URL, and capture time.

  1. Create a stack. Choose a name for the Notion page that will hold your research.
  2. Add a selection. Highlight text on a website, then use the popup or right-click menu.
  3. Keep reading. Add the next quote from another website to the same active stack.

Give each website a home.

For regular page and selection clips, domain rules choose the Notion parent page. Set them once in Settings.

Example rules you could set
WebsiteNotion parent page
developer.mozilla.orgWeb reference
arxiv.orgResearch reading

Subdomains match too. The most specific hostname wins, and a manual popup destination overrides the rule. Research Stack selections stay in the active stack.

Start with clips. Build a stack.

Use Free for pages and selections. Pro adds Research Stack and domain routing, without SmartClip block quotas.

A block is a piece of content, such as a paragraph or heading. Free usage cycles start with your first clip. Notion API, payload, rate, workspace, and service limits still apply on paid plans.

Studio is also available at $15 / 30 days or $144 / 365 days, with unlimited SmartClip blocks, Research Stack, and domain rules.

Before you start.

How do I connect Notion?

Create a Notion internal integration with Read content and Insert content enabled. Connect it to the pages you want to use, paste its token into SmartClip Settings, and check the connection.

Choose and save a Notion parent page before creating a Research Stack. SmartClip is not a one-click Notion sign-in.

Can I save without a network connection?

SmartClip has a local queue for accepted clips and retries delivery failures. It is not a guaranteed offline capture tool: with billing sharing enabled, a usage reservation happens before the clip is stored locally and requires a network connection.

Does it write directly to an Obsidian vault?

No. SmartClip downloads a Markdown file that you can move into Obsidian or use in another editor. Research Stack collects quotes in Notion.

What do paid features need?

Research Stack and automatic domain routing require an active Pro or Studio entitlement with billing sharing enabled. Notion features also need a valid integration token and access to the selected pages.

Read the privacy policy for the data used by clipping and billing.
